The chemical sector is the third largest industrial emissions emitter (behind cement and steel), producing eighteen percent of global annual industrial CO2 emissions. Chemical processing (including ammonia, ethylene oxide, and ethanol) touches nearly all goods-producing services and directly employs over fifteen million jobs. Energy usage in the chemical industry is expected to increase by 110 percent by 2050, along with a 100 percent increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

Chemical manufacturing facilities consume the largest industrial amounts of oil and gas and have few immediate options to decarbonize. Deploying carbon capture and storage technologies at chemical processing facilities can help the sector reduce over 30 percent of its CO2 emissions by 2050, alongside increasing use of electrification, alternative fuels, and better energy optimization.
