MANAGING CARBON EMISSIONS

Hydrogen

Hydrogen production, particularly from fossils fuels, creates significant associated CO2 emissions. Hydrogen accounts for six percent of global natural gas use and two percent of coal consumption, and global demand for all forms of hydrogen (green, blue, etc.) continues to grow.

Hydrogen is playing an increasingly important role in reaching net-zero targets, reflected in its increasing share of cumulative emission reductions. Continued growth of hydrogen demand and the adoption of cleaner technologies for its production will enable hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels to avoid up to 60 gigatons of CO2 emissions by 2050, representing six percent of total cumulative emissions reductions. Hydrogen, produced from renewables, nuclear, or fossil fuels with carbon capture, utilization, and storage can help to decarbonize a range of sectors, including long-haul transport, chemicals, iron, and steel, where emissions reductions is challenging.
